At the dawn of the 20th century, Japan was transformed. Over 200 years of feudal society and isolation ended and opened its doors to the world with a rapid industrialisation and westernisation, while the artists and craftsmen continued to polish their skills to the world top class and inspired the western artists and art collectors. Still its heritage is much enjoyed and loved, as seen in the world leading Khalili collections.

Pick of this month

Immaculate Antique Japanese Cloisonné vase, from Meiji period. Beautifully finished with the detailed patterns and drawing at the edge of the vase, which shows its quality and highest skilled craftsmanship. Capturing the fragile beauty of the flower and respecting the space and silence in expression, which is the characteristics of Rimpa school style of Edo period. The style inspired and influenced European and American artists and later we can see the result in Art Nouveau.

This design is made in the same style of the one by Ando Jubei, exhibited at "Meiji Kogei - Amazing Japanese Art" exhibition in Hosomi Museum Kyoto (驚きの明治工芸)(Dec 2016) ).
